A perennial milkvetch with angular, ascending stem and yellow flowers in dense inflorescences. It has a sweet taste, similar with Glycyrrhiza (liquorice); also used as fodder, medicinal and nitrogen-fixing species. Endangered in some of its wild habitat, especially toward its northern limit.

Germination: like for other Astragalus, scarification of the seeds is recommended before sowing in early spring; or sow in the fall – moist/cold stratification without any treatment.
