The leatherleaf is a low growing evergreen shrub with thick, leathery leaves, which are turning red-brown in the winter (hence the common name).
White, bell shaped flowers on long inflorescences appear in April-July, depending on the region.

Germination: cold/moist stratification; naturally the seeds will germinate in sphagnum and sedge mats (light required).
