A climbing herbaceous vine with heart shaped leaves; dioecious. The flowers are insignificant; it is cultivated mainly for medicinal purposes. It also gives a nice ornamental aspect when allowed to climb on a support.

It has been extensively collected from the wild for its tubers, hence its endangered present status. Therefore, the garden cultivation is also important for the conservation purpose.
Germination: sow in the fall (cold/moist stratification); it will germinate in late spring after the temperature gets towards 20C or more.
