The Western prickly pear can be easily confused with O. humifusa, but the yellow flowers have a red basal portion and the areoles of the flattened stem segments are equipped with 1-4 spines. Also it remains lower to the ground than O. humifusa. The mature fruits are red and edible.
Otherwise, it is fully hardy and enjoys the same growing conditions like O. humifusa. Great for the xeric garden; it brings a true appearance of dry habitats.
Germination: easy, warm germinator.
