Description
Ageratina altissima (formerly Eupatorium rugosum) can be found mostly in a woodland setting where clusters of white late summer flowers attract attention of the pollinators.
However, being extremely adaptable, it can also grow in full sun, with plenty of moisture, like seen in the gallery. In this case the foliage takes a nice, dark purple color towards the fall.
In fact there is a selected variety named ‘Chocolate’, with dark-tinted foliage all year long.
It is good to know that White snakeroot is considered a poisonous plant because it contains a toxin which can affect cattle and goats; their milk and meat becomes contaminated and the toxin can be passed on to humans upon consumption. Such things are not bound to happen in the garden though.
The flowers are great for late summer butterflies and other pollinators, no matter the growing location.
Germination: sow in late fall/early winter (cold/moist stratification); the seeds are very small and need to be sown superficial.
