Description
The seeds offered were wild collected from a population of A. flavescens with pink sepals – shown in the picture.
It is well known that in regions where the A. flavescens and A. formosa co-occur, hybridization takes place. On the same time, variations of A. flavescent sepals coloration is accepted and mentioned in Flora Of North America; a long time ago there even was such an A. flavescens var. miniana described. More recently, a name for the hybrid was proposed as Aquilegia x miniana.
However, we cannot do molecular studies of this population, and considering the growing conditions: in part-shade and at lower level altitude, the population where the seeds were collected is most likely to be a hybrid.
Aquilegia flavescens type is a sub-alpine level species growing in full sun – see a previous offering: Aquilegia flavescens.
Germination: easy after cold-moist stratification or with GA3 treatment just before sowing (soaking the seeds in 500 ppm solution for 24 hours works just fine). Seeds germinate best when sown very superficially, covered only by a thin layer of the seeding substrate.
Careful when pricking out, the seedlings don’t react too well at transplanting.
