Description
A semi-evergreen native sedge, best grown in full sun and moist locations. It can grow up to 60-80 cm tall and will form greenish yellow/brown, large spiked seed heads that are very attractive and persistent throughout the winter (if the squirrels don’t grab them ;).
The seeds are a food source for various birds and small mammals. Perfect for moist locations: pond edges, along streams; naturalization areas.
The splendid clump from my garden (gallery) grows at the bottom of a sloped area where the water drains slowly (also there is a clay based substrate), so you don’t really need a pond or a very wet area to be able to grow it.
Germination: sown in the fall or cold-moist stratification for 3 months and spring sowing. Very easy.
