Description
A tall thistle with many pink flower heads in mid summer, which are very attractive to a large range of pollinators. Also, larval host for few butterflies.
It is monocarpic and it will die after flowering and setting seeds. I am starting to like more and more the biennial and monocarpic species. They give the opportunity to grow, enjoy and learn about more species in my relatively small garden. So, I find their life cycle a quality in this regard.
The common name alludes to the fact that the young shoots and roots were used as food by the Native Peoples.
Germination: cold/moist stratification.
