Description
The Caucasian yam root is dioecious a climbing herbaceous vine with heart shaped leaves cladding the trellis. The small flowers are insignificant, like in many Dioscorea species; later in the fall, the garlands of fruits draping over the foliage are very ornamental.
Cultivated mainly for medicinal purposes, this species has been extensively collected from the wild for its tubers. As a result, it has become endangered in the wild habitat. Therefore, the garden cultivation is also important for the conservation purpose.
Germination: sow in the fall (cold/moist stratification); it will germinate in late spring (temperatures must get well above 20C). Best to grow the seedlings in the same pot for 2 years (two years old seedlings in the gallery image). The seedlings will start growing vigurously in their third year.
