Description
Stiff clumps up to 45 cm (depending on the garden location) with spiky bracts surrounding the abundant steel-blue flower heads during the summer.
There is a whole group of E. planum cultivars differing a bit in size and flower colors/leaves than the type species.
I don’t know how well the characters are inherited through seeds propagation and it doesn’t matter much; those who have seen it know that the type species Eryngium planum is nice enough as is.
For a full sun, well drained location with good toleration of well poor soils: very useful plant for rock and scree gardens.
Germination: cold/moist stratification for 1-2 months recommended before germination at room temp./outdoors in late spring. Or sow in the winter and leave the pots outdoors.
