Description
Who isn’t familiar with the Cardinal flower, at least from the pictures? Crazy colour, eh?
The scarlet flowers are pollinated mainly by the hummingbirds, so it’s a must if you want to keep your hummers happy. It had medicinal uses for various conditions, including colds and rheumatism, while the dried leaves were smoked instead of tobacco.
Sometimes it can be short lived, but grown in optimum conditions (moist soils, part shade), it will reseed around. Grow it together with Lobelia siphilitica for a pollinators combo!
Germination: best if sown in the fall; requires cold/moist stratification; can also be spread around ‘in situ’ in the desired place.
