Description
We really need more grasses for our dry, shaded areas. The Melic grass with its small size, fine texture, linear leaves and delicate flower spikelets in the summer is a perfect choice. At maturity the spikelets have a papery, almost white aspect (you can hear about a Melica uniflora fo. albida because of this, but it is just the plain species).
It is very hard to take a good picture because of the graceful, fine spikelets. A great companion in my garden for Asarum, Paxistima canby, Hepatica americana and few others.
Seems to do best at the woodland edge but it can also be grown with a fair amount of sun with more moisture.
Germination: I grew it by sowing the seeds in late fall/winter – i.e. cold/moist stratification.
