Description
This beautiful species peony is worth growing just for the way it looks in very early spring when emerging. The new shoots emerge with tufts reddish fine leaves; later the foliage will change to light green. The red, scented single flowers are also desirable. A full grown specimen in flower can be quite impressive.
The common names in its native lands, ‘steppe peony’, allude to the growing conditions: dry, hot summers. Quite expensive to buy, it is well worth to grow it from seeds and obtain a few seedlings at a fraction of cost.
Germination: cold/moist stratification required, i.e. sow in late fall. Unlike other species peonies, Paeonia tenuifolia will fully germinate in the first year (after a cold/moist period).
