Description
Once known as Oryzopsis/Piptatherum, I think the blackseed rice grass is a handsome species worth to be added to the woodland garden.
Its overall aspect somehow made me think of a short northern oat grass, although of course they have nothing in common.
It is rhizomatous but not aggressive, forming small colonies; the black seeds, resemble the rice grains, hence the common name.
In the wild habitat often grows on rocky forests, so it is a very nice addition to the shaded rockery, edge of the woodland garden, along other shade growing species. Combine it with Carex rosea for a great ‘grassy aspect’ in the shade.
Germination: sow in the fall/winter to be sure; it could be a warm germinator but it is new to the shop.
