Description
Prickly gooseberry is a small size shrub with mostly smooth but also thorny branches on the same plant, with small lobed leaves and yellow flowers in clusters.
The gooseberries are characteristic with soft flexible spikes and purple at maturity; edibles and very much appreciated by various bird species.
Germination: sow asap in the fall outdoors; a long cold/moist period is required to break down the hard seedcoats like for all Ribes species. Usually it will germinate in the second year after 2 cold cycles (winters); germination may be irregular (over a few years).
Various treatments like scarification can be tried to speed up the germination.
