Description
The NA native wild yam is a herbaceous vine, variable in height, which usually twines around nearby plants and trees; it is not detrimental to the other plants health though.
It is a dioecious species with a nice heart-shaped leaves and small greenish-yellow, insignificant flowers; the female plants will then form 3-angled capsules filled with few membranous seeds.
The wild yam has been utilized by the Indigenous people for various ailments hence its common name(s). Most important was the discovery that the roots contained diosgenin (a phytoestrogen); it marked the start of the era of birth control pills.
Germination: sow in late fall (cold/moist stratification); it will germinate in late spring.
