Description
The bear’s breeches is a great architectural plant with shiny deeply lobed leaves and interesting flower stems with white/purple flowers that are partially hidden by the ornamental purple bracts.
It is a striking plant and although it takes a few years to reach flowering age, it is worth waiting.
Germination: best sown in the fall (cold/moist stratification). The seedlings are easy to take care of.
I also obtained good germination by sowing in February; the pot was kept in a frost free garage for about two weeks then placed outside for the cold stratification (under snow). Best to use tall pots or transplant the young seedlings fast; they tend to form a strong root right away. They can be easily moved when young (a new plant or two may even appear from cutting the roots :)
