Description
Despite being easy to grow, hardy and long lived, most Amsonia species are under-utilized in the gardens. Most are also drought resistant after established.
Ozark Bluestar has shiny, leathery, willow-like leaves which in late fall take a golden color. Believe me it is worth a place in the garden just for the attractive foliage alone.
But there is more: clusters of light blue, star-like flowers somewhere in June will be greatly enjoyed, including by pollinators; they are followed by drooping slender fruits in late fall.
Easy to grow and maintenance free; it just needs a few years to develop to a mature size. Drought resistant after it gets established. Not bothered by pest dues to the milky sap; the foliage retains an impressive clean look throughout the season.
Germination: cold/moist stratification for 1-2+ months; sow in late fall/early winter.
