Description
The lord and ladies are curious plants for our cold climate because they stay dormant in the summer and start growing in late summer/early fall, keeping their foliage handsome throughout the winter (when not under snow!).
Mature plants will emerge large, white-cream Arisaema-like flowers in late spring, which are followed by red berries; afterwards they go into dormancy for the rest of summer.
Arum italicum will spread if it enjoys the location; which means in a small garden you may have to gift away some tubers every few years. It needs good drainage, otherwise the late fall/winter wet may destroy the tubers, reason why it doesn’t have the ‘power’ to become invasive in coldest/wet regions. Great to have some ‘green’ foliage to admire in the garden in late fall/early winter!
Germination: short warm cycle (3-4 weeks) followed by few months of cold-moist stratification, ie. sow in the fall.
Growing from seeds there is no guarantee the seedlings foliage will present the same white veining of ‘Marmoratum’ cultivar.
