Description
The Buttonbush is a deciduous shrub with a rounded, open habit and glossy, green leaves. It takes its common name from the round flower heads formed from many, small tubular white flowers. They flower gradually over a long period in late summer and are very fragrant attracting especially long-tongue pollinators (butterflies, hummingbirds…). It is also a ‘honey-plant’.
The fruiting heads turn red in late fall before seeds maturation (the fruits are 2-seeded nutlets); the fruits are food for various birds and ducks.
It is a large size shrub that adapts well to regular garden soils, excepting the very dry locations, and it will remains smaller in size. Pruning can be done to keep it in a more compact, regular shape.
Germination: warm germinator; sow indoors in early spring or outdoors in late spring.
