Description
Leatherleaf is a beautiful dwarf evergreen shrub with thick, leathery leaves, which are turning red-brown in the winter (hence the common name). It has a dense branching and the older stems turn gray with a fine exfoliating bark texture.
The white, bell shaped flowers on terminal racemes appear in April-June, depending on the region.
A shrub I wish to be able to grow, alas it as described in the growing conditions section, it is an inhabitant of bogs and sedge fens, and so for garden cultivation it needs to be planted at the moist edge of a pond, stream or in a bog in order to survive.

Germination: cold/moist stratification; sow in late fall/early winter. Naturally the seeds will germinate in sphagnum and sedge mats, so we can try to ‘replicate’ by sowing in moss, better on sphagnum moss if possible, on top of acidic soil mix.
