Description
This is a super-hardy, super-fragrant, early spring flowering Daphne that should be grown more, especially in the colder regions (like parts of Canada…). It is often one of the first shrubs to flower in the spring, with a magnificent display of pink (rarely white) fragrant flowers that cover the bare branches, followed in the fall by red berries.
One can tell by the number of times I used the epithet ‘super’ that this is one of my favorite shrubs. Not an easy plant (like all the Daphne spp.) but after it gets established it will be long lived.
Use it as a specimen or in groups; rock gardens, edges of the woodland garden. The twigs and berries contain toxic compounds, although some birds species are known to eat the berries.
Germination: sown in the fall or spring after 3 months of cold-moist stratification.Update: there is contradictory information regarding the temp. requirements but considering my personal experience, the seeds need first a warm period (+/- 2 months) followed by cold period (winter) for germination. Sow the seeds as soon as possible in the summer; seeds sown in late fall/winter may germinate only in the second year. The seedlings pot showed in the gallery are 2 years old.
