Description
I wished this species would be naturalized here, like E. helleborine, but reports of a wild growing small population are only from one US location.
Growing as well from a deep rhizome, with stems with clasping leaves, the Marsh helleborine has larger, more showyi flowers than E. helleborine.
In many European countries is actually endangered by loss of habitat.
Germination: it is known that E. palustris is partnering especially with fungal species from the genus Helotiales (in much lower degree with others). This is good news because a quick search tells us that “most Helotiales live as saprobes on soil humus, dead logs, manure and other organic matter”.
So, find yourself a piece of dead log, placed it in a moist location and spread the seeds on it, then…fingers crossed. Definitely worth trying!
Those with access to ‘in vitro’ method of course have better chances of growing it.
