Description
A subalpine and alpine gentian (we know this means challenging in cultivation in very dry locations).
Stems with lanceolate, deep green, verticillate leaves and funnel shaped flowers, usually creamy white with purple dots and markings on the plicae. On a superficial look can be mistaken for a G. septemfida with whitish flowers.
Images: Gentiana gelida.
For a rather moist but well drained location in the rockery; sun to part-shade (especially in a hot climate). If we can grow G. septemfida and G. paradoxa, this one should be a good companion.
Germination: sow the seeds in late fall/early winter and provide cold/moist stratification. GA3 treatment can also be tried for starting the germination indoors but beware the elongation of the seedlings if the concentration is too high. Natural cold/moist stratification sometimes works best.
