Description
The seeds are always collected from plants with flowers in blue shades; you can get very nice surprises when the seedlings flower because the area of collections contains beautiful blue towards violet specimens.
Hepatica americana remains my favorite wildflower for shady areas: silky haired stems appear in early spring bearing white or blue flowers, followed by fuzzy new leaves with a heart shaped base and rounded lobes, which became leathery green afterwards and last throughout the winter.
Wonderful as a specimen that will increase in size with age or even more in groups, in part shade/dry to moist locations. It will do particularly well under dry shade conditions found under mature trees after it gets established; it can also be grown in containers.
Germination: please follow the instructions provided when purchasing seeds. Even when sown fresh, some of the seeds will germinate in the second year after sowing.
