Description
A deciduous NA Ilex very similar with Ilex verticillata; easily distinguished when in fruit: red drupes with long, red petioles (not shiny). A dioecious species as well.
To be used as I. verticillata in a slightly moist garden location, edge of a bog garden, naturalized areas; wildlife value.
Germination: warm/cold stratification (Baskin & Baskin). Sow right away in late summer; sown later in the winter/spring, the seeds may germinate in the second spring. Scarification of the seeds before sowing also helps.
