Description
A ground hugging perennial plant with a fleshy taproot and spectacular large flowers: white to deep pink or lavender.
The roots were gathered and consumed by Indigenous peoples in the past. You can read more about this species here: Spetlem
An excellent species for the rockery, worth to give it a try even in our climate – all it needs is a dry summer rest that can be accommodated in a wetter climate by careful planting (under a sloped rock), in a super well drained location or in a container…
You can find a lot of good advice for germination/cultivation together with mouth- watering pictures here
Germination: cold/moist stratification 2-3 months and germination in early spring.
Update: the seeds will actually germinate after 1 month of cold/moist stratification (+/- 4C), so they don’t really need to be sown in late fall; tested twice! Easy to grow, the seedlings will grow for a few months and then became yellowish and dormant – avoid over-watering at this stage! Grow the seedlings in the same pot for 2 years then try transplanting them in a place with very good drainage, or continue growing in a container.
