Description
Northern Bayberry is a large, aromatic shrub that requires little maintenance and is beneficial to the wildlife. It is dioecious with the flowers arranged in catkins. The female plants produce bluish, berry-like fruits with a waxy coat, persistent throughout the winter.
Traditionally the fruits were used to make bayberry wax candles (which are still made on a small scale); also the bayberry essential oil from leaves is used in many other products.
Germination: best if the waxy coating is removed by repeatedly washing the seeds, followed by cold/moist stratification for at least 2 months. Without removing the wax, the seeds still germinate but much slower and sporadic.
