Description
Another intriguing member of the Campanula family, a small, clump forming perennial from the Dolomite Mts,. with blue-lilac flowers in hemispherical umbels. The petal lobes are fused forming a ‘bottle-shape’ and a long, arching style protrude from their tip.
Formerly a Phyteuma, from which it is distinguished by the flowers; Phyteuma flowers have petal lobes that are fused at the tips only until the pollen is shed, at which point they open out, given them a ‘shaggy’ appearance.
Grow it together with Phyteuma scheuchzeri or Phyteuma orbiculare to notice the difference :)
Excellent for the rockery, or a container/trough, where you can keep a better eye on the ‘slug attacks’. They seem to ‘smell’ any Campanula-like from far away!
Germination: warm germinator in my experience. In case there is no germination, move the pot in a cold location. The small seeds need to be sown superficial (i.e. do not cover with potting mix, only a thin layer of vermiculite, grit of fine gravel) and imbibe the pot with water from below.
