Description
Yes, we have a native, small size buckthorn, which can be grown by those with a wet area in the garden.
A deciduous shrub with shiny, conspicuous veined leaves; the common name alludes to alder similarity but one can tell the plant is something else.
Female or male flowers on the same plant but in different inflorescences: very few, tiny flowers (with 5 sepals) and are followed by almost black fruits at maturity.
Germination: considering the other weedy Rhamnus behaviour, the seeds should be sown in late fall/early winter for cold/moist stratification outdoors.
