Description
Roscoea schneideriana is a super nice hardy ginger with fan-shaped leaves and violet flowers in late summer/early fall; they will open gradually over few weeks.
There is still confusion going on about various Roscoeas in the trades, but this one is easy to recognize, even if only after the particularly hooked stigma and white & round anther appendages.
It will flower quite fast after 2-3 years but expect to have a nice flowering clump only after 4-5 years. You can read and see more pictures about it here: Surprise, surprise! In the garden Roscoeas (which are emerging very late from the ground), are best planted nearby to other species that are emerging early in the spring.
Due to the position of the capsule not all seeds can be collected and this species will always self-seed close to the mother plant; after a few years there will be youngsters to share with the friends!
Germination: Roscoea species are warm germinators (room temp.). Soak the seeds for a few days before sowing, and spread them thinly over the mix: they need space to grow for one/two seasons in the same pot (ie. do not prick out the seedlings in the first year!). The seedlings will grow for a few months and then become dormant for the rest of the season (avoid over watering when dormant).
