Description
Roscoea tibetica is the smallest Roscoea of the genus of the hardy gingers and can be highly variable. Not a particularly handsome Roscoea if we are to compare it with R. purpurea, cautleyoides or other species that have large flowers.
Sometimes confused with R. alpina (which has bigger flowers) and forms of R. scillifolia (in this case the capsules form on the stems, in R. tibetica the capsules form at ground level – see the gallery picture).
But we don’t only grow handsome plants in our gardens ;) It is good to have it in the Roscoea collection plus, its wild habitat poses dangers in terms of conservation.
Germination: easy, with 1-2 months of cold-moist period, but I have also germinated seeds without stratification. It forms fleshy small roots that need good drainage and careful handling. Flowering starts after 2-3 years, depending on how well the root system develops.
