Description
The cloudberry is a low growing dioecious Rubus which spreads from rhizomes. It is very much appreciated and well known especially in the countries where it grows wild, for its golden yellow, juicy fruits which are eaten raw or used in various preparations: jams, juices, liquers, yoghurts,…. They also have multiple medicinal properties.
It is considered an endangered species in few regions, mostly due to habitat destruction.
Germination: cloudberry ‘seeds’ (actually pyrenes) are known to germinate poorly and over a long period of time; this is due to the very hard endocarp. Good germination can be obtained by removing the endocarp (which not practical for large scale sowing), mechanical scarification or nicking one end of the pyrenes.
A trusted source recommends 270 days cold stratification for germination (when sowing the pyrenes) which in translation means 2 years of cold/moist stratification. Seeds removed from the endocarp are said to germinate at warm – testing in progress, without much success.
