Description
Prairie dropseed is a fine textured grass, forming round tufts of narrow leaves that change to golden-rust in the fall. The flowering stems stand above the graceful clumps, with airy panicles composed of many small spikelets.
They supposedly have a sweet fragrance, which is quite rare among the grasses!
In some regions is quite a rare species due to its specialized habitat requirements, but adapts well in the garden. A beautiful, low maintenance grass, with wildlife value.
The well chosen common name alludes to the fact that the rounded grains will drop to the ground when mature. One more reason to be thankful to the person who collected and donated them!
Germination: according to the sources, cold/moist stratification; sow in late fall/winter.
Said to be low growing to reach maturity.
