Description
Mountain huckleberry can be found in dense patches in various Western locations and it is greatly appreciated for its delicious berries, which are reddish-black without a waxy bloom (forgot to take a picture before extracting the seeds!).
For those with a proper location, besides its commercial importance, mountain huckleberry can also be used as an ornamental shrub for its urn-shaped creamy-pink flowers and the foliage which turns a spectacular red- purple color in late summer/fall.
Greatly appreciated by humans and wildlife alike, it is also fire adapted with the leaves and stems resistant to low intensity fires and will regrow after intense fires from the deep rhizomes.
Germination: with cold-moist stratification for 3 months; seeds have to be sown superficial.
