Description
A nice Anemone usually found in wooded areas, with large white flowers at the beginning of summer, which are followed by ornamental seed heads (thimble-like), green at the beginning and then densely woolly, persisting for a long time in the winter. The foliage takes a beautiful reddish hue in the fall.
Similar to Anemone cylindrica in many regards; one easy distinguishable character are the seed heads which in A. virginiana are shorter and wider, and also the habitat in which they can be found.
All Anemones produce an allelopathic substance (protoanemonin) that inhibits seed germination and seedling growth of other species, useful in locations where you want to stop the reseeding of other species.
Good for the woodland borders, naturalizations areas; tolerates well dry shade conditions.
Germination: cold-moist stratification for +/- 2 months.
