Description
Amur maackia is a small size, deciduous tree in the pea family with a rounded crown, featuring spike-like clusters of whitish, fragrant flowers in mid –summer. The exfoliating coppery-bronze bark adds interest in older specimens.
While not as showy as its relative Cladastris lutea, Maackia has gathered more attention lately due to its cold and drought resistance, qualities which make it a useful tree for various locations. Certainly an interesting species to try for those into ‘grow your own tree’ habit.
Germination: sources indicate the same warm germination pattern like for Cercis canadensis (notice also the similar seeds) – keep the seeds into hot water for one day (this will lead to fissures in the seed coat and allow water absorption) and then sow and keep the sowings at room temperature.
If you plan to sow outdoors, use the hot water treatment one day in advance before sowing (depending on the region from April-May).
