Description
An outstanding cold hardy perennial poppy with large, truly deep red flowers (no hints of orange) with blue anthers, most times with black spots at the base. It is a summer dormant species; the rosette of new leaves starts growing in fall and will overwinter until spring under the snow. The growth is fast in the spring and it flowers in June usually. After that, it may or not, set seeds, and the foliage dies down, to repeat the cycle again starting fall.
It is not as much cultivated as Papaver orientale with which is very similar; most probably from lack of seeds.
Germination: easy, warm germinator – sow indoors in early spring (the seedlings will handle transplanting well) or outdoors in late spring. Do not sow too many seeds/small pot! Let them grow for a while and transplant the best 2-3/bigger pot. Plant the pot later in the summer (late June-July) in a good location: sunny, well drained. It usually starts to flower in the third year after sowing and the clump increases afterwards.
