Description
This shade species has a particular zig-zagged look given by the branched stems bent at nodes. As the common name implies, the leaves are clasping the stems. Bell shaped flowers white/cream on twisted stalks and red to purple berries.
The young shoots, the berries and the roots are said to be edible.
An excellent addition to the woodland garden. Grow it together with Trilliums, Uvularia, Maianthemum, Disporum….
Germination: sown right away in late summer/early fall (keep the pots outdoors over the winter), the seeds will germinate in the spring.
When sown later, the seeds will need two years to germinate. Treat the seedlings like those of Lilium and grow them in the same pot for 2-3 years; I tried to prick out my young seedlings a few years ago and lost them all.
