Description
The Japanese toad lily is an excellent plant for the shade garden, enjoying a moist location, preferably at the edge of the border so the unusual flowers could be easily observed in early fall.
The flowers are often compared with orchids; personally I don’t see the similarity. The white and purple, often with more purple spots have a distinct morphology and are typical for the Lily family. They are usually abundant disposed in clusters in the leaves axils.
Germination: the fruits and small seeds mature towards late fall, reason why they are not always available.
I found contradictory information regarding the germination requirements: some say the seeds require first a period of cold/moist stratification; others claim the seeds will germinate in 1-2 months at around 15C.
