Description
With rosettes of large, pleated leaves and majestic, tall flowering stems covered in myriads of star-shaped blackish flowers Veratrum nigrum is always an impressive looking plant. Like many other rhizomatous species it is slow to grow and reach flowering age, but worth waiting and meanwhile the leaves can be admired.
For these reasons it remains a collectors species; excellent in a part-shaded location especially in hot climates.
Like all other Veratrum species, its rhizomes are poisonous if ingested. It has had traditional medicinal usage (powdered rhizomes).
Germination: +/- one month of warm/moist stratification, followed by cold/moist stratification; it may require 2 seasons for germination. Best to sow the seeds and be patient.
