Description
A very cute violet with pale blue- violet flowers with darker veins; like the common name implies, the flowers have very long, usually hooked nectar spurs; almost hairless (some hairs present on the leaves margins).
Wonderful, you can try to grow it like in the picture, on top of moss covered rock or in any other part-shaded location.
Other woodland companions: Caulophyllum, Trillium grandiflorum, Uvularia, Thalictrum dioicum, Hydrophyllum virginianum, Actaea rubra…
From all the native violets, this one is the most difficult to collect. Even with practice it is very hard to predict when the capsules are ready and it doesn’t form cleistogame flowers, so the seeds are always in low supply.
Germination: I cannot find much reliable info, so it is safer to first use cold/moist stratification.
