Description
Ipomopsis rubra is a biennial species which will self -seed in favorable condition. In the first year it will form a ferny-looking rosette and spend the winter as such. In the second year flowering stems erupt, bearing myriads of bright, tubular scarlet flowers – a magnet for the pollinators and hummingbirds. When sown too early it is possible to flower very late in the fall of the first year (which is not desirable).
Outstanding tall plant for the flower border or in a scree garden as focal point. It has proved winter hardy in SW Ontario, probably the fact that the mother plant came from the same region has an influence.
Germination: warm germinator (if it doesn’t germinate in 2-3 weeks, provide a cold period); biennial. At times you may need to resow it.
